Welcome to the AGOYO Southeast website! My name is Caitlin Dowling and I’ve been a member of the AGOYO board since its inception in the Fall of 2015. I never had any direct intentions of serving in an executive fashion for the AGO, and certainly not as I started my first full-time job out of school. However, I was approached by Dr. Laura Ellis in Charlotte at regional convention in 2015, and alas, here I am!
Being a part of the start-up of the AGOYO program has been a challenge, but it also has been incredibly rewarding. I’ve watched organists my age and younger step up to the challenge of creating a new program. I’ve done everything from draft letters to the National Convention Convener to sit in countless Skype meetings trying to decide who to interview, or how to ask for money. I’m excited to be the head of the Mentor Program that we are launching this fall! (See the blog post about it here) Since I came to the organ late in life (my Bachelor’s is actually in Piano Performance!), the opportunity to provide mentors is incredible, considering the great impact of my own mentors. Without the guidance of one such mentor, Cam Bishop, I don’t know if I would even be an organist today. I encourage you get involved on the ground level of this wonderful program.
I graduated from Mercer University, as a student of Dr. Jack Mitchener, with a Masters in Organ Performance in 2015. I currently serve as Music Intern at West End United Methodist Church in Nashville, TN. West End has an incredible music program, with two adult choirs, three children’s choirs, a youth choir and two handbell choirs. It also has the largest organ in the state of Tennessee, and one of the largest in the Southeast totaling at 136 ranks! In my free time (which there isn’t much of!), I enjoy distance running and working as a staff accompanist at Belmont University. If you’re ever in the Nashville area, let me know and I’d love to show you around the instrument. I look forward to continuing to build and grow with the board of AGOYO-SE this year and please get excited with us and get involved!
